The Strand Palace Hotel, London was the venue for the 2014 BBS Conference. Staff from all regional offices gathered at the Hotel for what proved to be a very interesting day. Nigel Barr MD and Paul Boyce opened proceedings with an overview of the history of the companies, the current business position and their rapid growth over the past 12 years.
Nigel provided staff with information on the wide range of new projects being serviced by BBS Building Control, the significant month-on-month increase in new clients due to recommendation and referrals and the challenges and opportunities facing the Building Control profession and the business in the future. Staff were thanked for their continued commitment to providing a high quality and professional service for clients which is the backbone of our successful business model.
Paul outlined the increasing range of services provided through BBS Site Services including steadily developing Health and Safety consultancy, Quality Auditing for major developers and rapid growth in our Party Wall Surveying business. The morning’s agenda also included an update on the broad range of assessment and support consultancy services provided by our Environmental division to many major developers. Andy Mitchell, Director of Environmental Services, gave examples of his teams current large schemes.
Over lunch staff had the opportunity to catch up on the news from around the regional offices and to meet all the new members of staff that had joined BBS since the last conference!
Following the lunch break, the Directors had a surprise in store for everyone…complimentary tickets to the viewing platform at The Shard. London’s tallest building! Looking at the London skyline from the 68th floor of the building, we all agreed it was a splendid end to a very good conference!

The Former Marconi New Street Works site in the centre of Chelmsford, built in 1912, was the world’s first purpose-built radio factory. The factory closed in the 1990s and remained derelict for many years until the site was purchased by Belway Homes in 2012. Planning permission to develop the site was granted in March 2013 and demolition of the majority of the site, including the iconic Marconi House and Building 720, began in April 2013. Certain elements of the original buildings will remain, including: the Grade II listed water tower, the New Street cottages, the power house and the 1912 front building façade.
The redevelopment comprises the construction of a mixed-use scheme of 418 units contained within buildings extending to between 2 and 7 storeys. 35% of the residential units is affordable housing and is being designed to meet Code Level 3. Also the conversion of other buildings on the site to provide commercial floor space and other non-residential uses (A1-A4, D1 and D2). One of the new commercial units will form Bellway Homes’ new offices.
BBS Environmental has been involved with this interesting project from the Planning stage. Consultancy services and assessments include: Energy calculations and report for the Planning Application; SAPs and Code assessments; BREEAM (to achieve Very Good BREEAM rating) and SBEM.
All work is scheduled for completion in early 2016 and the pricing structure for dwellings is due to be announced in early summer of this year.

The Glow Exhibition Centre at the Bluewater Shopping Centre was the venue for this year's Build It Live Show. Over 100 exhibitors, from across the self-build industry, were on-hand to offer advice about each stage of the construction process: from land purcahse, planning and warranties through to construction methods and materials and interior design.
Among the many exhibitors was Design For Me. A new and interesting concept, created by Emily Barnes, which tailors architects and designers to a client's specific project type and requirements.
BBS exhibited at the show for the first time this year and the surveying team was kept very busy throughout the weekend advising prodspective house builders on the Building Regulations and required environmental assessments.
BBS wishes to thank the organisers and all their staff for such a well-attended and interesting show.
