Work has commenced at Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex. The partial basement rooms, adjacent to the sunken garden of the west access to the castle, are being converted into offices. BBS has been appointed Building Control on this interesting project and will be working closely with Stuart Page, the architect, and the building contractor, John Farrington & Co. Limited.
Herstmonceux Castle was originally a manor house, dating back to the 12th Century, but in the mid 15th Century the owner partitioned the Crown for the right to fortify his manor and subsequently became a castle. Today the castle is home to the Bader International Study Centre providing education for students from around the world. The castle hosts many conferences throughout the year and also provides B&B accommodation within the estate.

Nestled amongst mature trees on a 5-acre landscape, the 4 bedroom dwelling has been carefully positioned and sympathetically constructed to harmonise with its surroundings. Constructed from SIPs panel technology the fully-insulated and water tight frame was erected in just 10 days. BBS provided the Building Control on the conversion and extension to the original property. Tristan Wigfall, Director of Alma-nac is the architect and Heyne Tillet Steel the structural engineer.

BBS has been appointed Building Control on a mixed-use development in Kentish Town. Situated on the site of the former Magnet Showroom, the project comprises the construction of a part 7, part 3 storey building with 2 basements. The first site inspection was carried out in mid-April: piling and capping beam work is progressing well. The completed building will provide 273 student accommodation units and a warehouse.

BBS appointed Building Control on this scheme which forms part of a regeneration programme approved by Westminster Council in 2016. The project comprises: demolition of deck parking garages and construction within the existing the Elgin Estate to provide 43 homes (7 market homes, 24 affordable rent and 12 intermediate rent).
The project also includes a 5 storey block facing onto Elgin Avenue of a community space, nursery and replacement WECH office and 7 flats (site 1), use of the WECH offices at 416 Harrow Road to form 2 flats (site 2), removal of pitched roofs to the 2 storey blocks between Athens and Kincardine Gardens.
A roof extension will be constructed to form 10 flats, four communal winter gardens, conversion of nursery at ground / first floor to form 2 two bedroom wheelchair and 2 two bedroom flats (site 3), removal of pitched roofs to the 4 storey blocks and roof extension and infill to form 2 two bedroom wheelchair and 18 flats, four communal winter gardens (sites 4 and 5), reconfiguration of communal amenity space fronting Harrow Road.

BBS has been appointed Building Control on an extensive refurbishment and re-modelling of an existing commercial property in the heart of Tunbridge Wells. The scheme involves the strip-out and de-construction of the 3-storey building back to its original concrete frame. The subsequent re-build includes two additional storeys and a large rear extension.
The building will feature a bronze clad louvre screen to provide protection from solar gain and privacy for the tenant. Bronze will also be used in the new entrance, circulation core and in the box framed cladding of several windows on the main façade.
The energy modelling of the building is being undertaken by the BBS Environmental Team.

BBS appointed Building Control on another major conversion and extension project in Croydon. The current 5 storey building which occupies a prominent position in London Road, will undergo a new top floor extension with balconies to the front elevation and replacement facade. There will also be 4 storey and 5 storey extension to the rear of the building, plus a front and rear basement level extension. Once complete the building will comprise 150 studio rooms and 145 sq. m. of commercial space on the ground and lower ground floors. BBS Environmental is also carrying out the SAP calculations.
